Tattooing-- once thought of as barbaric and the preserve of the lower classes-- is now mainstream. Tattoos are worn today not only by celebrities and leading media folk, but also by an increasing number of people in the street. Displayed proudly or hidden discreetly, tattoos are a permanent expression of individuality, and tattooing has finally emerged from the backstreet parlour to become high fashion. TATTOO contains over 65 superb color and black-and-white photographs specially taken for this book. Award-winning photographer Dale Durfee has persuaded a variety of people from every walk of life to show their tattoos. Here she presents the very best examples, some in high-detail close-up and others covering the whole body in spectacular style. Every aspect and type of tattoo is included, from delicate and beautiful flowers and rock 'n' roll icons, to Buddhist prayer symbols and interwoven Celtic designs of great simplicity and power. All the models share a refreshing open attitude and display their tattoos for the camera with warmth and spontaneity. Some have described the significance of their designs, why they were chosen and what the tattoo means to them. With amazing designs, remarkable people and some practical guidance on getting your first design, TATTOO is an inspiring and entertaining collection of body art-- the ultimate celebration of one of the world's oldest forms of body decoration.

 "Junk." 2006-09-22
By M. Perry
I'm really not sure how anyone could give this 'book' 4 or 5 stars??? Have any of you people writing these reviews actually seen other books on the medium. Must be not.

It's just a small collection of tattoo photos with little or no text accompymining them and no theme or direction to the photos and 'book' at all. Before I bought the book I was fooled by the rave reviews and the $6.00 price. I'm thinking, 'How could a tattoo book with such great quality be only $6.00?' Now I know. Just like your Momma warned you, "If it sounds too good to be true it probably is". Moms was right.

Stay away from this book and do yourself a favor--go down to your local magazine shop and shell out the $5 or $6 for a quality tattoo mag. You'll get about 10 times the bang for your buck.

If you really want a killer book on tattooing (albeit in the Japanese style) shell out the extra $$$ for Bushido. Now that is what a book on tattooing should look like and read like.

This was garbage.

 "Great photographic story" 2006-02-24
By M. Dabreau
I bought this for a friend that's starting up his own tattooing business to serve as inspiration. He was impressed with the quality of the color photography, although he wished there was some textual detail to explain the background behind some of the models' tattoos. It's always nice to know the whole story.

"a joyous celebration of the decorated body" 2004-05-22
By Merrily Baird (atlanta, ga USA)
If you are, as I am, most accustomed to reading about Japanese-style body decoration, Dale Durfee's "Tattoo" will come as a most welcome surprise. Here the tattoos represent the work of numerous artists--located primarily in the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands--and the bodies decorated are those of both men and women whose ages range from 20 years all the way up to 70. The design styles, meanwhile, embrace everything from traditional Japanese to Polynesian to a charming spread of Winnie-the-Pooh style fantasy.

Still, the most compelling aspect of Durfee's beautiful photographs is the sense of life that radiates from her models. Too often tattoo models are stiffly posed with expressionless faces. Here you can enjoy the beautiful range of artwork represented and celebrate as well the pleasure that beautiful tattoo work (and other body decoration such as piercing) has brought to those who bear it, including two well-matched middle-aged couples. How very refreshing and inspiring!

High Voltage Tattoo is a graphic perspective on today's global tattoo culture by Kat Von D, star of The Learning Channel's L.A. Ink and one of the most talented and popular artists working today. Designed in a style that is reminiscent of a handmade Gothic journal with its red padded cover, ornate typography, and parchmentlike pages, it throws the door wide open to tattooing culture in the way only an insider like Kat can.

High Voltage Tattoo traces Kat's career as an artist, from early childhood influences to recent work, along with examples of what inspires her, information about the show and her shop, her sketches, and personal tattoos. The book goes deep into tattoo process and culture: readers can see up close the pigments, the tools, and the making of complex, even collaborative, tattoos.

With a foreword by Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, the book features images and stories about celebrities, rockers, pro skaters, and everyday citizens, including Slayer's Kerry King, Anthrax's Scott Ian, Margaret Cho, Jackass' Bam Margera, David Letterman, and many others. It profiles and showcases the work of artists Kat has selected from all over the world, her interviews with people who have compelling tattoos and stories, and amazing images of extraordinary tattoo work. Numerous portfolios throughout the book showcase a range of relevant subjects, from the black and gray portrait work for which Kat is famous to a popular tattoo theme, such as the rose or biblical images. There is a knockout ten-page full-body spread of Kat—clad in a yellow bikini and seven-inch, rhinestone-studded red stilettos—that catalogs in detail all her personal tattoos on her front, back, left, and right sides—even her hands and head.

 "Excellant book" 2010-01-07
By Sphynx Lover (Louisiana)
I have always been fascinated by tattoos, and love to look at them as beautiful examples of art. I watched Kat Von D, first on Miami Ink, and then on LA Ink, her own show. She is very beautiful and talented. I saw this book, and had to have it. It is only makes me a bigger fan. It is a delightfully written autobiography. The photos are awesome, and show every detail of the tattoos. If you are even thinking of getting this book, "BUY IT", it won't disappoint.

"Way better than I expected" 2009-11-24
By Faith Landsman (Burbank, CA)
I am often disappointed in tattoo books with little story and the same old coverage of the history of tattooing. I've also regretted purchases of books by high-profile folks with something to sell. This is neither of the above. This book is entertaining, visually stimulating, inspiring and packed full. I'm really thrilled with this book. Congrats Kat. It's a winner.

"Great book for the Hot Topic Punk rocker in you!" 2009-09-29
By Mclain (CA)
Kat lacks any ability for narrative storytelling, so she exploits her tattoo clients' real stories, and makes money off of their experiences. She leads us to believe that she was affected by her Tattoo clients' stories. If she was, then she would have given them royalties to their stories, rather than keeping the cash to help subsidize her income, because of her inability to do more than just awesome Portrait tattoos. The pages are covered with scattered senseless artifacts with minimal design. I felt like I was looking at Kats junk drawer in her mind. It belongs on the shelf of a Hot topic in the mall.

This is such a beautiful book - Kat's story is intriguing, and the photos and drawings are all beautiful. The quality is outstanding for a great piece of art. It has a permanent place on my coffee table and everybody thumbs thru it. My only problem is that some of the type is very hard to read ... (my eyes aren't so young!). Whether you're into tattoos or not it is totally work owning.

 "It's Basic but Good" 2008-08-04
By Alexis Jane (Manhattan Beach, CA)
I really like this book of flash. The idea isn't to create a real tattoo to put on your skin based on these illustrations, but as a building tool for other creations. If you're looking for Sailor Jerry flash, but buy Sailor Jerry flash, this clear as day says "Classic Tattoo Designs".

My co-workers used something quite similar to create temporary tattoos with my name on them that they all sported on my birthday. Great idea!

 "Lame" 2006-07-30
By Borne Too Loose (Brockport, NY)
Someone handed this off to me in the shop and it is certifiably pretty lame. Cartoony, hardly tattoo-looking (shading anyone?) and just plain goofy. Never even looked at the CD, as the book was proof enough that it was dumb.

I SUPPOSE one could redraw the ideas into something viable and cool, or you could just find the original Jerry pieces from which these were homogenized from.

WEAK. Save your money.

"Pretty good, for clip art" 2006-07-10
By L. Parker (Cleveland, OH United States)
This book has a good selection of classic tattoo designs, and I would consider it a good value for the price. The artwork is good, not amazing, but certainly adequate. Each design is offered in color and in linework. If you're looking for a good, all-purpose book of flash, and not necessarily a lot of authentic Sailor Jerry stuff, this book (and CD ROM!) is a good choice.

I bought this book expecting to find "old school" tattoo flash and could have not have been more disapointed. It took me all of five minuets to repackage this book for a return.

The examples are cartoony at best, more like temporary tattoos for a child than a good reference for an adult.

Stick with Sailor Jerry

Tattoos are sexy, fashionable, and creative. This compendium features over 480 designs by the world's leading young graphic artists for tattoos that are new, different, and edgy.Little has appeared that explores fresh designs for tattoos by contemporary graphic artists and designers. Tattoo Art & Design corrects this with designs by over 60 of today's up-and-coming designers. They draw inspiration from diverse cultures and media, and bridge the highly graphic world of skin art and the exploding creativity in graphic design communities worldwide. Among the featured designers are Kinpro, Klaus Haapaniemi, Marcus Oakley, Rex Koo, Rinzen, Musa Collective, and Stapelberg & Fritz. The designs featured here shatter the conventional notion of the tattoo. Gone are hearts inscribed with names, anchors, Celtic harps, or tribal bands. Instead, the tattoo designs are based on Japanese animé characters, abstract art, hip-hop culture, and Day-Glo pop art in a palette of vibrant colors and elaborate shapes. These fun and playful designs will inspire a new breed of tattoo artist as well as the next generation of graphic designers.

 "Artsy fake tattoos" 2009-11-10

This book makes a break from traditional tattoo designs, true enough. It is a mind altering and opening experience. Read in tandem with other tattoo books and art and design books, this beautiful, glossy, thing that weighs about 8 pounds(!) could be a real eye opener for someone looking for something a bit different. Super tasty!

 "Not really relevant" 2009-01-18
By C. Leeds
I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is really into tattoos. I assumed it would be about tattoos. However it is not, it's about art design. I didn't see a single real tattoo in the book, all the tattoos on people's bodies are fake. Beyond that many of the designs simply don't work as real tattoos because of the level of detail they include (fine for fakes printed from a computer).

After looking at it I feel like I've been kind of taken.

This book is great. Visually it's fun and intriguing. I am a lover of tattoo art and design, so this makes for an awesome coffee table book. Guests at my house enjoy leafing through it and it adds art interest to my family room.

I give this book three stars because I was expecting more from it. I thought it would be something that explored design theories based on traditional tattooing. I'm not totally sold that this was worth the money.

I suggest checking this book out in person at a book store before committing to the price.

Overall, I like this book.
