Fantastic new Tattoo Design and Reference book. 140 pages packed full of easy to use money making designs. I paid full price for mine from Superior Tattoo, but it is worth every penny. Use one idea out of 100's and you've got your money back. Makes a great shop reference book or idea book for you new tattoo.

"Good as a reference for ideas." 2009-11-09
By M. Lawson (Illinois)
I bought this as a gift for my son who is a tattoo artist. He only does custom work so he doesn't keep 'flash' tattoos on his walls for people to choose from. He's using this book as something customers can flip through for ideas so they can discuss the examples of theme, colors, sizes, and so on.

The book doesn't have THAT many tattoos. It doesn't deserved to be called a "tattoo bible". Also the quality of the drawings weren't amazing.

Inspired by traditional tribal tattoos, this collection of new artwork is an excellent sourcebook for bold and interesting designs from a range of cultural and historical sources. This reference features a wide variety of styles—from the fine line work of henna patterns to black work patterns that incorporate large solid areas to motifs, such as totems, talismans, and free–form designs—combined with repeating elements, including triangles, spirals, suns, and barbed wire, to create body art that makes a bold visual statement of individuality that is rooted in traditional tattoo art. Additional information on the symbolism and meaning associated with the attributes of each tattoo is included to make this a comprehensive sourcebook on tribal tattoo art.

 "Horrible, just horrible!" 2009-12-18
By Tattoo Artist (USA)
I don't care what the quoted reviews say, this book is terrible.

I have been a tattoo artist for ten years and NEVER have I seen such horribly designed "tribal" designs. Most are extremely dense, overly complicated pieces that would not fit the body well at all. A good tribal tattoo is meant to accentuate the anatomy of the body, and follow the musculature of the wearer. In short, a well designed "tribal" tattoo should flow.

It is painfully obvious that Ms. Irish is not a tattoo artist. In fact, she is a wood carver, and has written many books about that. Well, I am here to tell you that woodcarving designs do NOT make for good tattoo designs. It is also obvious that she has no knowledge of the history or origin of so called "tribal" tattooing, which can be easily found in "Tattoo History-A Sourcebook" by Steve Gilbert.

I suggest that Ms. Irish should "Google" the father of modern "tribal" tattooing, Leo Zulueta, and study his work. I also suggest that she should pick up a copy of Tattoo Time, specifically, the issue "New Tribalism", as well as the book "Marks of Civilization", by Arnold Rubin. Look at the tribal designs in those two works, then compare them to the stuff in Irish's book. Actually, there is no comparison.

This book is a waste of time.

you don't need anything else but this book! If you are considering to have another tattoo, or if you're looking for your first tattoo, there are too many designs, you don't want to pick just one! if you are in love with the body art, have this with you.

 "Good Book" 2009-09-14
By Bluegrl (Riverview, FL, USA)
This book is perfect for you if you're not familiar with the Tattoo/Flash/Savage magazines. Personally I've seen all this stuff a million times before in the previously mentioned magazines. The only thing this has that mags don't is nudity. I had to hide a few pages from prying eyes. My cynical side wonders why Kim Saigh, Corey Miller, and Hannah Aichitson were included. La Ink anyone??? Overall good.

 "Outstanding Phots" 2009-08-24
By Joe Bagadonuts (Leesburg, VA)
The pictures are great. Lots of up close shots that let you see the detail. Multiple rolling shots of tats that wrap around an arm or leg so you can see the whole design. I wish the writer went into more detail in their interviews with the artists. I am very happy with my purchase of this book.

 "turrible." 2009-05-01
By derf (My living room, Maui HI)
this book is pretty awful - - we had it at a shop i used to work in, and it usually didn't take clients more than a minute of looking at it before they put it away.

it's just kind of boring, nothing in it i could see wanting to tattoo on myself, lacking in inspiration, like a really plain, uninventive, blank coloring book.

pay the money for a book of flash - - you really can't go wrong seeking out original, beautiful flash by established artists. amazon actually has a lot to offer in that department, more than they used to. as far as what amazon can sell you, the sailor jerry flash books volumes one and two, and Don Ed Hardys tattoo flash book remain the gold standard.

get those instead.

 "Two Great Artists" 2008-08-06
By Timothy J. Alexander (Pennsylvania, USA)
I'm not just a fan of the book, I'm a client who is happy to return to Chris Alexander over and over again. In fact, the stencil of one of my custom designed tattoos is listed on page 50. I took a dragon's head statue into Chris, and he designed it up for me with no problem. It was, in fact, created as a cover-up, and I wish they had included before, during, and after photos to show what a great job he did. I get complements on it all the time.

 "Highway Robbery" 2009-07-02
By Jillian Raczynski (buffalo, NY)
Setting a price of almost 300 dollars for a USED book that can be obtained at numerous bookstores, to include Barnes and Noble, just because it is unavailable new from Amazon.com is highway robbery. I noticed this when I was searching online for this book, and shopping around for the best price, and noticed the set price for it used. One seller is even offering it for over 2000 dollars. For a used book with MEDIOCRE designs? Are you kidding me? It can also be purchased from Canada and from the UK for under 20 dollars American. I think it is horrible business practice, and a shame that sellers would try to gouge customers like this.

"A Great Idea Generator for Tattoos!" 2009-04-16
By Friday Jones (New York City, NY)
People LOVE The Tattoo Sourcebook!

Barnes & Noble can't keep it on the shelves and in Ireland where they don't have B&N I was offered over 150 euro for my copy. It's already gone into it's second printing since it's launch in October 2008 and for a first-time effort on a subject heretofore NO major publishing house would touch, Harper Collins' gamble on the tattoo industry has paid off in both tattoo interest and tattoo education. That's good for everybody: artist and collector. It's chock full of ideas and explanations for those repetitive questions that plague a lot of tattooers from "What's the difference between tribal and Celtic?" to "Does it hurt?" Plus it's HUGE with TONS of designs that mirror your typical street shop it's range of quality. Even the most sophisticated tattooer and collector will find something to appreciate in the scope of it's content.

From pork chop to back piece this is a groundbreaking book whose impact is just starting to be felt in lobbies and living rooms around the world!

xoxo

Friday Jones
